# Licensing scope

On 2 November 2026 Igor Rivin authorized CC BY 4.0 for the monograph and MIT for newly authored maintained computational companion code. These are scoped grants, not a single license for every file in this repository.

| Material | Applicable notice |
|---|---|
| Igor Rivin's monograph text, original figures and TeX sources in `book/main.tex`, `book/polyhedral_volumes_and_geodesic_identities.tex`, `book/chapters/` and `book/figures/`, and the corresponding material in PDF/HTML editions | [CC BY 4.0 legal code](CC-BY-4.0.txt); [monograph attribution and historical-export notice](MONOGRAPH-NOTICE.md). Separately credited third-party material is excluded. |
| Newly authored maintained computational code, tests, current input fixtures and associated README documentation listed in [new-companion-files.txt](new-companion-files.txt) | [MIT license, Copyright 2026 Igor Rivin](new-companions-MIT.txt). The list identifies the covered files; it does not cover every file under `experiments/`. |
| Imported volume toolkit and its maintained code under `packages/volume-toolkit/` | Existing [toolkit MIT license](volume-toolkit-MIT.txt) and [package notice](../packages/volume-toolkit/LICENSE), retained byte-for-byte. Existing third-party notices continue to apply. |
| Historical `research/ipoly/`, original archives, provenance, recorded results, acceptance/contract records and other third-party or inherited material | Existing terms and notices remain in force. No new blanket license is granted to these collections. Absence of a license is not a permission grant. |

## Monograph credit and earlier exports

Copyright 2026 Igor Rivin, Department of Mathematics, Temple University. The monograph acknowledges substantial help from Codex in its preparation and revision and in the computational companions. A suggested attribution is: “Igor Rivin, *Polyhedra, Moduli, and Quantum Geometry*, CC BY 4.0,” with a link to the material and license and an indication of changes as applicable. The license text governs; this suggested form adds no license conditions.

The CC BY 4.0 grant also covers Igor Rivin's monograph text and original figures embodied in preserved earlier monograph source/PDF snapshots and Section 9 chapter exports. Those files retain their original bytes, dates, source identities and evidence status. A mixed archive is not licensed as a whole by this notice. In particular, the grant does not newly license the separate historical `ipoly` study or scripts, third-party code, fonts, reproduced material, or other content for which Igor Rivin has not granted rights. Retain their existing attribution and notices. The [accompanying monograph notice](MONOGRAPH-NOTICE.md) can be distributed beside an unchanged historical download.

## Computational scope and distribution

The exact MIT file list covers the maintained `counting_mixing`, `normalizations`, `quantum_geodesics`, `quantum_surgery`, `section15`, `section15_quantum`, `section30`, `section9` and `torus_campaign` experiment sources, their tests, named current fixtures and associated README files, plus the experiment index. It excludes `experiments/section15/historical-table.json`, `experiments/quantum_geodesics/contracts/`, generated reports/results, archived source snapshots and dependencies. Separately attributed or licensed material retains its own terms even when used by a listed implementation.

Keep the relevant full license text, copyright/attribution notices and this scope map with redistributed covered material. For newly assembled bundles containing selected toolkit files, also retain the exact toolkit notice. New monograph/source bundles should include `MONOGRAPH-NOTICE.md`; this is also an accompanying notice for preserved Section 9 monograph downloads. Historical archive contents and scientific results are not rewritten to insert notices. Their present licensing scope and their historical computational or review status are separate questions.

## License-text sources

The full [CC BY 4.0 text](CC-BY-4.0.txt) is copied from Creative Commons' [official English plain-text legal code](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.txt), retrieved 2 November 2026. The [new-code MIT text](new-companions-MIT.txt) uses the [Open Source Initiative's official MIT text](https://opensource.org/license/mit), retrieved the same day; only its year and copyright-holder placeholders are filled with `2026` and `Igor Rivin`. Legal terms are unmodified. The existing toolkit texts are preserved separately, including their original notice formatting.
